Diet Chart for Diabetes
Most diabetic patients have high cholesterol and high blood pressure and so they are more susceptible to heart disease. It is thus of crucial importance to keep not only the blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels in check but also monitor the blood sugar levels. This can be achieved by exercising regularly, reducing stress and modifying the diet. An efficient diabetes diet prevents the blood glucose level from increasing too much and aims at lowering the LDL cholesterol levels and increasing HDL cholesterol, which mobilizes cholesterol from the various parts of the body towards the liver for elimination from the system.

A diabetic menu would normally consist of 1800 calories per day and when divided out will be 50% starches, 30% proteins and 20% fat. By following this diet, you will help to keep your blood sugar levels more under control and in turn, your health will become better.

To control the blood sugar levels, every diabetic needs to know how to control the blood sugar levels and what foods particularly help to lower down the glucose levels.

1. Foods with lower cholesterol content help the diabetics to prevent from cardiovascular diseases. Lettuce is not only low in its cholesterol content but also contains only 3 % of carbohydrates. This combination makes the lettuce ideal to reduce blood sugar level.

2. French beans (kidney beans) are rich in fiber and proteins with a reasonable amount of complex carbohydrates. The dietitians strongly recommend French beans to diabetics to lower blood sugar level.

3. Tomatoes are not only low in carbohydrates but also help to control the glucose level in the urine.

4. Juice of Brussels sprout mixed with the juice of French beans is considered natural remedy for diabetes. It works by stimulating the production of insulin thus lowering down the blood sugar levels.

5. Soya beans not only control blood sugar level it also regulates the elevated glucose levels in the urine of the diabetics. Soya beans are rich in proteins and low in carbohydrates.

6. Vegetables like onions and garlic are also good for diabetics. They reduce the bloods sugar levels in the blood. It has been discovered that onion contains an anti-diabetic compound. This compound is much similar to the compounds (propyl, allyl, allicin and disulphide) that are used for the synthesis of insulin.

7. Bitter gourd also lowers the blood and urine sugar levels as it contains natural hypoglycemic agents. Certain vegetables contain very little amount of carbohydrates and calories and so can be used freely by diabetics. But few vegetables contain high amount of carbohydrates and calories and hence must be taken by diabetics in very small amount.

Diet is the cornerstone of diabetes treatment because food intake affects the body's need for insulin and insulin's ability to lower blood sugar. So person suffering from diabetes should maintain a healthy balanced diet.

Fatty foods often contain a lot of butter, cheese, oil or mayonnaise. These should be avoided to control high blood sugar. Choose instead grilled, baked, roasted, or steamed food. If you must use oil at all in your cooking, replace cooking oil with olive oil or peanut oil, as these contain less fat.
Dos for Diabetics

1.Diabetics should take 5-6 small, frequent meals rather than 3 big meals.

2. They should take 15-20 glasses of water daily to avoid constipation.

3. They should compensate for less salt in food by including spices like dalchinie, zeera, pudina, dhania, garlic, vinegar, ginger etc.

4.Diabetic persons should discard the topmost layer of chicken pieces as it contain fat.

5.If a diabetic feel giddy, it indicates that the blood glucose level has fallen, a condition known as hypoglycemia. So, in this condition they must immediately eat energy giving food like apple or drunk fruit juices.

6.They should have normal eating at correct times and at regular time intervals.During eating, if sodium is to be restricted then they should avoid spinach, peas, carrot.

7.Eating should be according to well balanced diet, it should not be more than 15 gm/day and Proteins should not be more than 64 gm/day.

People suffering from diabetes should follow certain rules during eating :

They should not crave for sweet foods but instead follow a suitable well planned diet in order to maintain normal blood sugar. Level.

Diabetic person should never eat and drink together. As we see normally people are in habit of drinking water after having meal. But this is not the right choice. For diabetics, water or any other liquid is recommended only after half an hour after a meal. But if a person wishes, he can drink water or any liquid half an hour before eating but not during eating. However, there are certain liquids like milk, Buttermilk, Vegetables soups, which can be taken with meals.

Food should not be eaten hurriedly by diabetic person. Food should be eaten very slowly and chewed properly. Proper mastication process should be followed. Due to proper masticatory and grinding of food, it is properly digested and thus normal good health of patient is maintained.

Diabetic patient should not keep fast as missing of meal is not favourable for them. Missing meals can lead to various problems which may be highly dangerous.

Diabetics should never eat to a full stomach. They should always leave the table, with a feeling that they could have eaten more. Otherwise eating in them would easily serves as a contributory factor in raising blood sugar level.

Patient should keep quite at the time of eating. Talking should be strictly avoided while eating.

Patient should not eat forcefully, in case the appetite is lacking.

Person with diabetes should start eating with a relaxed state of mind. When he/she sits for a meal, there should not be any worriedness, tiredness, anxiety, apprehension, or he should not be in a bad mood. It is because these type of feelings temporarily paralysis the synthesis of digestive juices particularly hydrochloric acid, thereby hindering the proper digestion of foods.

Diabetic patient should not smoke or drink alcohol while eating.

In a people with diabetes, the raw vegetables and raw fruits should not be taken together.

After a principal meal, they should not do any heavy work.
